Kitchen and Bath Remodels, Residence, Portland, Oregon

In  Portland, Oregon an active couple with a growing family  dreamed of using their sprawling ranch home to its fullest capacity.  They wanted their children to use their home for their entertainment rather than local malls and fast-food restaurants.  The home spoke of the promise of  that dream within its warren of three small rooms and under-utilized space.

In addition to designing the new kitchen/great room for gatherings around the nearby pool and a wide-screen television, the family also hoped to obtain a dream kitchen for their entertaining passion.  They needed a coffee center, a six-burner free-standing range, storage for food,  a large island that could serve as a focal point for shared meals, and a media wall with room for a computer, a large-screen entertainment center, and a wet bar.

The couple also expressed a desire to have a kitchen that not only worked well, but would be welcoming and reminiscent of a kitchen in a Tuscan villa. A discussion ensued regarding re-using  existing fireplace and Roman brick seating shelf, throwbacks to the 60’s.  The planning stage on this particular project extended for several months, but the results gave the clients exactly what they wanted.

The original three-room space became one large open area.  The outdated kitchen and breakfast nook took shape as a newly expanded kitchen at one end.  The old Navajo-style corner fireplace and Roman brick seating that formerly occupied the wall separating the kitchen from the family room were completely removed.   Instead, a new gas fireplace was designed to fit between the new French doors that lead out to the entertainment and pool area.

Rich Tuscan colors from a Brunschwig & Fils fabric became the keystone for the color palette.  Captivating golds,  eye-catching blues and reds, and aged greens taken from the fabric provided the colors needed to offset Oregon’s gray winters.

After blowing out non-bearing walls, and capitalizing on both the remodeled indoor  square footage as well as the luxe garden space surrounding the in-ground swimming pool, the clients were able to achieve their desire to have a great social gathering  space,  where friends and family are drawn together.

Client Testimonial

We have known Shirley Roggen for over 20 years and she has worked on projects for us in two homes. She always puts her clients first and her integrity, business savvy, and creativity put her ahead of her peers. Her vision to think outside box always amazes us, and during our projects she always brought us multiple options to choose from so we felt empowered in the design decision process. She balances this creativity with an ability to cut corners on expense to best serve us, her clients, by staying within budget. She has worked on projects for us that include bathrooms, kitchens, and wine cellars and we have always been pleased.Shirley Roggen was our designer and decorator on a major remodeling project that included a kitchen, family room, wet bar, and powder bath. Before we started the project she spent a lot of time consulting with us. She listened to our ideas and turned them into line drawings to confirm the direction. During the project she addressed our budget and advocated for us with the sub-contractors to make sure the project would meet our approval. Her attention to detail and the wonderful palette of colors she selected added the finishing touches. We love the ambience she created and have had many compliments from all who see the finished product!
